IP Address Lookup — Geolocation Data for Any IP
IP Lookup is a free tool that resolves any IPv4 or IPv6 address to its geolocation profile in under a second. Results include country, region, city, approximate coordinates, ISP name, organization, timezone, and currency. The data comes from GeoPlugin's own continuously updated IP database — the same source trusted by over 200,000 websites and used to process more than 1 billion monthly requests.

What IP Lookup Returns
Paste any IPv4 (e.g., 203.0.113.45) or IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) address and get a structured profile: country with ISO code and flag, region or state, city, and approximate coordinates. On the network side: ISP name and autonomous system number (ASN). For context: timezone offset and the dominant currency for the detected country.
Coordinates are approximate to city level — standard for IP-based geolocation and sufficient for content personalization, analytics segmentation, and fraud screening. IPv6 coverage is growing but still less comprehensive than IPv4 in some regions. If an IPv6 lookup returns limited data, try the corresponding IPv4 address if available.
Problems IP Lookup Solves
Tracing Suspicious Login Attempts
Your dashboard shows a login from an unfamiliar IP. Paste it into the lookup tool and within seconds you know the country, city, and ISP. If the user claims to be in London but the IP resolves to Lagos, you have a clear signal to investigate further. Security teams use this as a first-pass filter before escalating to a full forensic analysis.
Verifying Ad Traffic Sources
Running paid campaigns targeted at Germany, but your analytics show a traffic spike from IPs you can't identify? Bulk-check a sample through IP Lookup. If the IPs resolve to data centers or countries outside your targeting, you may be dealing with click fraud or bot traffic — information your ad platform needs for a refund claim.
E-Commerce Fraud Screening
A customer places a high-value order with a US billing address, but their IP resolves to a different continent. This mismatch is one of the strongest fraud signals in e-commerce. IP Lookup gives you the geographic data to cross-reference against the order details before shipping.
Debugging API and Server Requests
When testing API integrations, you need to confirm that requests originate from the expected region — especially when working with geo-restricted APIs or region-specific endpoints. Look up the source IP of incoming requests to verify they route through the correct data center or VPN exit point.
Identifying Unknown Traffic in Server Logs
A sudden spike of requests from a single IP range can be a CDN node, a web scraper, or a DDoS attempt. IP Lookup reveals the ISP and ASN, which helps you distinguish between legitimate CDN traffic (e.g., Cloudflare, Akamai) and potentially malicious sources.
Accuracy and Limitations
IP geolocation is accurate to the country level in over 99% of lookups and to the city level in roughly 80–90% of cases, depending on the region and ISP infrastructure. Mobile carrier IPs and satellite connections may resolve to the ISP's routing hub rather than the user's physical location. VPN and proxy IPs resolve to the exit node, not the person behind it. These are industry-wide characteristics of IP geolocation technology, not GeoPlugin-specific limitations.
IPv4 vs. IPv6 Lookups
The tool accepts both IPv4 (e.g., 203.0.113.45) and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) addresses. IPv6 adoption is growing, but geolocation coverage for IPv6 ranges is still less comprehensive than IPv4 in some regions. If an IPv6 lookup returns limited data, try the corresponding IPv4 address if available.
